The Briscoe Family Private Cemetery is located at 5827 ½ FM 723 in Richmond, Texas on the William Andrus A-3 Survey. The land is comprised of 3 tracts which were donated to the cemetery at various times by descendants of William Montgomery Briscoe. These include a 0.581 acre tract (Vol. 385, p. 173), a 0.4578 acre tract (Vol. 2308, p. 1704) and a 1.41 acre tract (FBC Deed Record- 20090752800). On April 26, 2022, the cemetery association sold 0.119 acres to the State of Texas for the widening of FM 723 (Deed record- 2022018698) for a new total of 2.341 acres.
In 1835, when General Parmenas Briscoe (1784-1850) came to the area now known as Fort Bend County, Texas, he purchased five thousand acres of land. However, he was not a resident of Texas and could not legally purchase the land so his friend, William Walker, purchased it for him (Fort Bend County Deed Record- 1840117014).
In April of 1839, Parmenas Briscoe instructed William Walker to do a Quit Claim deed of the property to Parmenas’ son, James Montgomery Briscoe (1812-1852). The property transfer was completed in November of 1839 (Deed Record- 1840117014).
Upon James’ and his wife’s (Susan Hibernia Mason Briscoe) early deaths from Cholera, the property was left to their son, William Montgomery Briscoe (1851- 1899), and then to their grandson, Andrew Clyde Briscoe Sr. (1897- 1980), who together with the children of Andrew Clyde Briscoe Jr. donated land to the cemetery. As of March 15, 2025, there are 53 known graves in the cemetery with the oldest one being Annie Chilton Briscoe who died in 1881. Burial in the cemetery is restricted to the descendants of James Montgomery Briscoe and Susan Hibernia Mason Briscoe, descendants’ current spouses, and their legally adopted children.
The Briscoe Family Private Cemetery Association (BFPCA) was established in 1958 for the purpose of governing, improving, and maintaining the Briscoe Family Private Cemetery. The Association is operated as a nonprofit (501 c13) and is not permitted to engage in any business unrelated to family burials, expansion of the existing cemetery, or associated maintenance / improvement of the property. All persons having burial privileges are entitled to membership in the Association, subject to the rules and regulations of the Association. The BFPCA is run by a 7- 8 member volunteer Board of Trustees who are descendants of James Montgomery Briscoe and who represent the five remaining family branches. The 2025 board of trustees is comprised of: Amy Briscoe-Eagle, Frank Briscoe, Jr., Mary Claire Huntington, Mary Thornhill, Clayton Nix, and Frank Williford.
Upon her death in 1974, Georgie Briscoe Briscoe’s last will and testament established The William Briscoe Cemetery Trust at the First State Bank of Uvalde with a $10,000 endowment to provide for perpetual care of the cemetery. The trust is still in existence and continues to be managed by the First State Bank of Uvalde.
